KAPIT: Teachers and students at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Nanga Bena, Sungai Sut, can now breathe a sigh of relief as Kapit MP Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has pledged to provide financial assistance to the flood-affected school.
In a statement today (Aug 25), Nanta said that the amount of aid would depend on the extent of the damage caused by the recent flooding.
“I will allocate between RM5,000 to RM10,000 to each school affected by the floods, channelled through the Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG),” he said.
Nanta, who also serves as the Works Minister, noted that the floodwaters at SK Nanga Bena had receded, and cleanup efforts were already in progress.
He also said that the school is currently assessing the damage and will submit a report to the Sarawak State Education Department.
Nanta emphasised that he had been closely monitoring the flood situation in Kapit, which had severely impacted several schools.
His Political Secretary, Ambrose Abong Bugek, had visited the affected areas on his behalf on Thursday, 22 August 2024.
“I was informed that the Social Welfare Department of Kapit Division has already provided clean water to the residents, including the affected school,” Nanta said.
He directed his team at the Kapit Parliamentary Office to continue monitoring the situation and to provide immediate assistance as needed.
“I urge all residents, teachers, and students affected by the floods to follow the instructions of the authorities to ensure everyone’s safety,” he added.
On August 24, SK Nanga Bena, through its principal, Edwin Lang Nanyang, made an urgent appeal for help from the public and relevant agencies after the school was hit by a flash flood.
The floodwaters submerged several buildings and the school dormitory, reaching up to the roof level.
“We urgently need assistance, not only to clean the school but also to replace essential items for our students, such as uniforms and books, which were destroyed in the flood,” Edwin said.
