KUCHING: Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi is capable of carrying out his duties if given the opportunity to become deputy prime minister (DPM), says Lidam Assan.
Lidam, who is Nanta’s former political secretary, echoed support for the proposal to appoint the Kapit MP as DPM.
This proposal was recently put up by many quarters, including PRS Youth information chief Andy Lawrence.
“To understand the landscape of Sarawak and the development that can be brought into the state more comprehensively, it would be better if a Sarawakian is appointed for this position.
“The appointment would be timely and by considering the inclusiveness of the role of all Peninsular, Sabah and Sarawak MPs in the highest helm of the country’s governance.
“The election of MPs from Borneo will also provide an opportunity to execute a more targeted focus on the development of Sabah and Sarawak, which will be in line with the progress and development in Peninsular Malaysia,” Lidam said on Wednesday (Aug 18).
He pointed out that if the role of DPM is entrusted to Nanta, who has extensive experience in politics and rural issues, the cooperation between federal and state governments could be amplified and strengthened.
“During his stint as federal Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister, Nanta had successfully helped Sarawak to obtain LPG Regulatory Exemption in the state, obtained permission for SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd to become an oil company in Sarawak and assisted in resolving petroleum sales tax issues involving Sarawak and Petroliam Nasional Berhad.
“These achievements have been among the important milestones for Sarawak and the state government.
“We hope that more progress can be achieved if the post of DPM is entrusted to him.”
