KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed condolences on the passing of former Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
“I, on behalf of the Madani government, extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Allahyarham and the people of Sarawak.
“We, especially the people of Sarawak, mourn the loss of a respected statesman. The contributions and services of the late Allahyarham to the nation and the state of Sarawak will be forever remembered,” he said in a Facebook post.
The late Taib, who passed away at the age of 87, died in the early hours of this morning at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur.
He succeeded Tun Pehin Sri Abang Salahuddin Abang Barieng as Head of State on March 1, 2014, and was in his third term as head of state.
Prior to his tenure as Head of State, Taib Mahmud served as Sarawak’s longest-serving chief minister, holding office for 33 years from March 26, 1981.
His demise marks the end of an era for Sarawak, as it bids farewell to a leader who has left an indelible mark on the state’s political landscape.
