PUTRAJAYA: The first National Book Data Study, conducted by the Ministry of National Unity through the National Library of Malaysia (PNM), has been completed, establishing a current profile of the country’s book industry.

National Unity Minister Datuk Seri Aaron Ago Dagang said in a press statement today the study plays a critical role in intellectual development, education, commerce, and cultural advancement, experiencing significant growth in recent years.

“The study reveals that 944 publishing companies are registered with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), alongside 57 associations related to publishing registered under the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

“In 2021, the publishing industry contributed RM4.9 billion to the national GDP. Data from 2013 to 2022, collected under the Library Materials Deposit Act 1986, highlights the number of published book titles across various fields,” he said.

He was confident that the study would support the government in updating the National Book Policy, adding that the key indicators from the study would serve as benchmarks for industry players, government bodies, and the public.
