SIBU: The 2024 National Electric Vehicle (EV) Forum and Workshop aligns perfectly with the Sarawak government’s vision for a new economy, says Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh.

He highlighted that Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg frequently emphasises the importance of the green economy, green technology, hydrogen, and other environmentally focused economic resources, all of which are highly relevant to the workshop.

“This initiative aligns well with efforts to combat climate change, as electric vehicles (EVs) can significantly reduce environmental impact.

“EVs are a key part of Sarawak’s vision for developing this industry,” he said at the workshop’s opening ceremony, attended by 200 participants here, Friday (Nov 8).

Wong noted that EVs have gained global attention and are becoming increasingly affordable in the transport sector. In 2023, EV usage accounted for 1.6 per cent of total global vehicle usage, rising to 2.28 per cent between January and April this year.

“These vehicles are likely to gain widespread acceptance in the future as they are eco-friendly and help tackle global climate change.

“They are also set to become one of the most important automotive industries in the years ahead,” he emphasised.

Wong encouraged participants at the forum and workshop to seize this opportunity to advance Sarawak’s EV industry. He also underscored the significance of this event, noting that it is the first of its kind to be held in Sarawak.

“I am confident this will mark a new beginning for those involved in the EV sector in Sarawak,” he added.

The two-day forum and workshop are organised by the Sibu Automobile Repairers Association (SARA) in collaboration with the Federation of Automobile Workshop Owners Association of Malaysia (FAWOAM). It is supported by Business Events Sarawak and Sarawak Skills.

The event aims to introduce and explore electric and hybrid vehicle technologies, which are becoming increasingly significant in the automotive industry.
