THE state government has no immediate plans to establish a casino at the Borneo Highland Resort.
Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting said the resort has good potential to become a tourist destination and it will be an integrated part of development in the future.
“It will contribute greatly to the cross-border tourism considering the decision by the Indonesia to move it capital city to Kalimantan Nusantara.
“We will definitely attract more domestic visitors not only from Kuching but also other parts of Malaysia, Singapore and Kalimantan due to its easy access and close proximity,” he said.
He was replying to Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang during question time today.
He also added that the economic impact for that area will be tremendous as it will benefit the local community, including providing employment opportunities.
“The government will be looking for ways to develop Borneo Highlands Resort into an integrated resort equipped with facilities such as the wellness hub and event halls.
“The area will be promoted as a favourite destination,” he said.
Nevertheless, he said development efforts will require a holistic and proper study in line with the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PDCS) 2030.
