KUCHING: Santubong MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar agrees with Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari in urging Sarawakians to reject Malayan politics.
“As of now we can see there are not many politicians and political leaders in the Peninsula who are able to represent the cultured society we aspire to be”, he told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.
He was commenting on Abang Johari’s call to Sarawakians to reject Malayan politics as they (Malayan politicians) often have conflicts among themselves which shows they have no unity and harmony to lead the nation.
Wan Junaidi stressed that the chief minister was reasserting the sentiments and feelings of many Sarawakians.
“Politics, at the very basic, is the art of vying for power to manage and administer a state or country.”
Wan Junaidi pointed out that there should not be any problem in vying for power through elections.
“But lately, the general elections have become so intense that open physical confrontation occurs. Some politicians are outright uncivilised and uncultured,” he added.
He explained that the last 14th general election (GE14) was a high-water mark of the lies, deceits and falsehoods.
“In some cases, defamation and slander were rampantly thrown in together with abusive language and superlatives. This seems to continue unabated”, he remarked.
He said Sarawak has long rejected and cringed at this political culture and practice and it was not good for multi-racial and multi-religious country like Malaysia.
“Multi-faceted, gentle and polite Sarawakians have to distant ourselves from such unhealthy political development.
“We want to grow and develop the state to be high-income region without abandoning the good culture, good manners and truthful people imbued with good eastern and religious values,” added Wan Junaidi.
He regretted that some Pakatan Harapan local leaders and politicians had fallen into the trappings of their Malayan counterparts.
“This, Sarawak must reject. Otherwise, the racial harmony, religious acceptance and integration of the people in the state will be at risk. We cannot afford it.
“This underlies our concept of Sarawak first — to preserve the solidarity, religious and racial harmony in the state.
“The new political culture of Malaya is just repugnant to Sarawak’s well-being and prosperity,” stressed Wan Junaidi.
