KUCHING: As a language, literature and publishing agency Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Sarawak Branch must coordinate its three main functions with the core of the digital economy.
Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the coordination would certainly support the Sarawak government’s idea to make Sarawak a developed state by 2030.
“Having been established for 45 years in Sarawak, DBP must already know and understand the aspirations of this state, especially to become a developed state by 2030 with the Digital Economy policy.
“Therefore, it is very important for these three functions (language, literature and publishing) to be used as a backup in developing technology and access in the state,” he said.
He said this in a speech read by the Sarawak Premier’s Political Secretary Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman at the opening of the Intellectual Carnival 2022 in conjunction with the 45th Anniversary Celebration of DBP Sarawak Branch, here, today.
Commenting on the three main functions of DBP Sarawak Branch, in the context of language, he said language was not only used as a communication tool but also as an issue of awareness of the absolute rights that are the basis of a citizen’s identity.
Similarly, with publications, he emphasised that they are not only creative but also findings, whether they are the result of research.
Publications are no longer only in the physical form such as books but have been able to spread in the virtual world to be easily accessible and obtainable.
“Therefore, methods and approaches must give a more authoritative impact, not just the physical transition to digital but to open up a space of knowledge that can generate improvement, innovation and sophistication.
“In other words, its methods and approaches are user-friendly, easily accessible, light but compact, fast but sufficient and able to stimulate the thinking of the community directly or indirectly,” he added.
