MIRI: Minister in the Premier’s Department, Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai, has expressed concern over the shortage of Iban language teachers in Sarawak schools.
Emphasising the importance of the Iban language, he said its inclusion in the school curriculum is important to enhance and preserve the language.
During his speech at the closing of the ‘Jaku Iban enggau Pengelandik Jari’ symposium on Saturday, Sikie called on Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) in Sarawak to advocate for the teaching of the Iban language.
He encouraged PTAs to formally request the state Education Department to offer Iban classes if there are at least 15 students interested in learning the language.
Sikie highlighted that historically, PTAs had to submit written applications to their district or state Education Department to have Iban lessons introduced in schools.
He reiterated the necessity for this practice to continue, urging parents to ensure their children have the opportunity to learn the Iban language if the student numbers meet the required threshold.
The minister revealed that currently, only 305 teachers in Sarawak are certified to teach Iban, a number he deemed insufficient.
He advocated for more Iban descent students to take up the language as an elective subject, thus ensuring there are enough qualified teachers to meet the demand in schools, regardless of their location.
“We need more teachers to teach the Iban language,” Sikie told local media at a press conference following the symposium’s closing.
“I urge PTAs to apply for Iban language classes if there are at least 15 students interested. This is crucial for the preservation and promotion of our language,” he said.
The symposium also saw the attendance of Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil and Engkilili assemblyman Johnichal Rayong.
