MIRI: A single mother’s assistance group from Harmony’s Welfare and Social club distributed food parcels to 128 needy single mothers in this district last Saturday.
Most of the essential items such as rice and cooking oil were donated by Senadin assemblyman and Minister for Transport Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who is also the club’s patron. Two generous donors — Grace Wong and Simon Phang also chipped in with food parcels.
The single mother’s assistance group was set up about 20 years ago and has been actively giving welfare assistance and counselling to the families and their children, including organising free tuition and computer classes for school-going children.
Besides that, the group also organised several skills training courses on pastry making, bakery, sewing and cookery for the single mothers.
Through the group’s assistance over the years, some of the children have managed to further their higher education and become professionals in various fields.
Lee congratulated the club’s chairperson and founding member of the Single Mother’s Assistance Group, Connie Tang for her noble contribution and assistance to the needy single mothers’ families and their children since its establishment.
