KUCHING: An innovative safety enhancement has been introduced to the traffic lights at the junction of Jalan Batu Kawa and Batu Kawa Old Bazaar.

This improvement involves the installation of neon lights on the traffic light poles, with the aim of enhancing road safety.

Deputy Premier and Batu Kawa assemblyman Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said this is the first LED-illuminated traffic light poles in Kuching.

“This additional illumination will enhance safety of road users, including speeding vehicles which are frequently observed on the main road, especially with high flow of traffic,” he said in a Facebook post.

He also conveyed his appreciation to the Public Works Department (PWD) divisional engineer Liew Ming Chek and Seri Teknik Sdn Bhd for the smooth installation of the neon lights.

Meanwhile, Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) chairman Tan Kai also said the project implemented under PWD Sarawak, intends to improve safety measures and enhance aesthetics.

“Moreover, the neon lights will synchronise with the colour of the traffic light when it turns red, yellow and green.

“This will enable drivers to be more alert and can be notified from far when driving towards the traffic light,” he told New Sarawak Tribune when contacted.

When asked whether traffic lights situated at areas under the jurisdiction of MPP have similar features, Tan Kai said an assessment on the outcome of the neon light installation at Batu Kawa traffic lights will be done first.

“This is the first one, will see the effect of it first,” he said.

Earlier on Aug 14, Dr Sim also officiated at the launch of the traffic light poles with neon light features in a simple ceremony.
