KUCHING: Nestlé Malaysia has marked its official entry into the fast-growing plant-based foods segment in the out-of-home sector, partnering with KyoChon to launch a meat-free menu using its all-new Harvest Gourmet plant-based range.

Catering to a wider consumer base, the new meat-free menu at KyoChon is aimed at those seeking to reduce their meat intake while still enjoying the signature taste of Malaysia’s tastiest Korean fried chicken.

The plant-based meat consists of Harvest Gourmet’s meat-free schnitzel which tastes like real chicken, made wholly from plants such as wheat, beetroot and non-genetically modified organism (GMO) soy, which is rich in protein and a good source of fibre.

Available since February this year, KyoChon’s new plant-based offerings include KyoChon Meat Free Wrap and KyoChon Meat Free Bibimbap in two flavours — KyoChon’s signature soy garlic or red pepper (spicy).

The KyoChon Meat Free Wrap is priced from RM21 (combo with wedges and drink for RM26), whereas the Meat Free Bibimbap is priced at RM25. Both are available across all KyoChon stores nationwide.

Juan Aranols, chief executive officer of Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad, said there is a growing appetite for plant-based foods, noting that more people are seeking healthier food options which are also better for the planet.

“With many Malaysians looking to reduce their consumption of meat, our Nestlé Professional business is excited to join hands with KyoChon to introduce our first made-in-Malaysia plant-based meat products under our Harvest Gourmet range,” he said.

He said going plant-based is a food revolution that is transforming how people think of and consume food.

“By expanding our product portfolio with meat-free plant-based solutions, we are championing a more efficient and sustainable way of producing food that helps to reduce the consumption of natural resources, while providing high nutritional value for consumers,” he added.

Meanwhile, Terry Goh, managing director of KyoChon Malaysia, said while KyoChon is known for premium Korean fried chicken, their new meat-free menu aims to cater to modern diet preferences.

“There is a growing number of Malaysian eaters who have made lifestyle decisions to reduce their meat intake for health, spiritual or social reasons.

“We are pleased to team up with Nestlé Professional and incorporate Harvest Gourmet products into our menu offerings so that our consumers have a wider set of choices to enjoy,” he said.

It should be noted that KyoChon’s meat-free menu items are strictly non-vegetarian and non-vegan, as the meat-free schnitzel contains egg as an ingredient, and they are cooked in the same oil used to cook chicken items.
