KOTA SAMARAHAN: She’s only 23 years old but Dayang Nur Shafiqa is already a serious businesswoman. She sells confections and cakes that she personally makes.

The Kuchingite was a Culinary Arts student at UiTM Penang in the field of Hotel and Tourism Management from 2018 to 2021.

“Now I am doing business full time because I prefer to work for myself and choose the culinary field related to the course I was studying,” she told New Sarawak Tribune.

Dayang began by selling donut towers. Because there were not many traders in Kuching who sold donut towers then, she received a satisfactory response.

“The confections that I am increasingly selling now are cakesicles, cakepops and the recently trending Mirror Glaze Cake.

“On the day, the cake became viral on Facebook, an influx of messages and orders ensued, with the number of shares reaching 1000 within a span of two days,” she said.

Dayang runs the business from her home; its address is Temenggong Haji Gobil, Jalan Sultan Tengah.

As the sole owner, she handles all the work herself. However, if there are many orders, she will hire workers.

“To continuously captivate the interest of individuals and perpetually advance sales, I consistently develop novel products and proactively engage in promotional initiatives,” she explained.

Despite the rising costs of materials, she tries to maintain a balance between affordability for her customers and profitability for her business.

“Thank you to my customers for supporting my business and prices. My selling prices are from RM25 to RM250, depending on the products ordered by the customers.

“Among those who support and encourage in this business are my parents, family members and friends.

“I am positive and know I need to take advantage of the expertise I have in the field of pastry and culinary to present to the public and my customers,” she said.

Dayang hopes her business will continue to thrive in the future.

“To be honest, I didn’t expect my sales to go viral since I am only a small trader and only promote the sale products on Instagram and Facebook.

“But anyway, thank you to everyone who followed, liked and shared my sales posts,” she said.

And what is her message to the small traders like her?

“Just keep on doing what you want to achieve without thinking too much. Always grab the opportunity available. If you don’t succeed, at least the experience will teach you to be better in the future,” said Dayang.
