KUCHING: Sarawak is keen to explore collaboration with South Korea’s Incheon International Airport Corporation on the proposed New Kuching International Airport.

In stating this state Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin pointed to the development as being key to positioning Sarawak as a regional aviation hub in the future.   

He said he would lead a delegation from his Ministry to meet with the Incheon airport management to delve deeper into the details and explore potential future collaboration.

Lee said this after a delegation from Incheon International Airport Corporation paid him a courtesy call to discuss airport development with the Sarawak government.

During their visit on July 25, the Incheon delegation shared their experiences and strategies in the transformative journey of Incheon International Airport’s development since 1989.

They highlighted strategic considerations for site selection, phased construction, and budget strategies that have contributed to making Incheon one of the world’s leading airports.

Lee said their presentation underscored the airport’s pivotal role in South Korea’s economic growth, particularly following the Seoul Olympics in 1988, and the significant increase in per capita gross domestic product (GDP) over the decades.

He disclosed that the delegation also discussed the potential areas of collaboration with the Sarawak government.

“I thanked the delegation for sharing their experiences and management strategies of Incheon International Airport and their invitation to visit the airport,” he added.

Incheon International Airport Corporation was represented by its top executives Chang-Kyu Kim, Vice President of the Future Business Division, Martin Song, Director of the Overseas Business Group,Yoonhee Ha, Assistant Manager of the Overseas Business Group, Sang-Hoon Kim, Manager of the Airport Construction Planning Team, HAIC, and  CEO of Economic Regulatory and Administrative Consulting and Former, Se Ho Kim.

Also present in the meeting were Invest Sarawak chief executive officer Timothy Ong and other senior officers.
