KUCHING: The new line–up of city and district councillors, including mayors in Sarawak, will be announced after the State Cabinet meeting soon, said the Kuching City South Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng today (Jan 30).
“After March 31 the terms of the 32 councillors in MBKS,including myself, as mayor, will be expiring and there has to be a decision on the selection of a new mayor and councillors in Sarawak,” he told the New Sarawak Tribune after a press conference on the MBKS Chap Goh Mei concert to be held on Feb 4.
Wee said the names of the new councillors for all the 24 local councils in the state, including the MBKS, MPP, Sibu Municipal Council and Miri Municipal Council, representing all the political parties will be submitted to Deputy Premier Datuk Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.
“Datuk Sri Dr Sim will then make a selection and decide if better candidates should be included in the list submitted to him. After which, he will present the selection and matters concerning additional candidates to the State Cabinet meeting for endorsement.
“We will first submit all the names of the potential candidates to the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government for Datuk Seri Dr Sim’s decision.
“All the 24 local councils councils are under his ministry except for the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) and the Kuching City North Council (DBKU) which are under the Premier’s jurisdiction,” he said.
Wee also disclosed that by next month, all the names of the candidates from the MBKS will be submitted to Dr Sim.
It is reliably learnt that the term of existing councillors throughout the state who had served six years or more will no longer be renewed.
The decision is seen as a move to encourage new faces and young councillors to serve the people.
Meanwhile, the concert will be held at the MBKS’ Community Hall on Feb 4 at 7.30pm and is expected to feature severalpopular artists.
