KUCHING: The proposal to establish a branch of Shanghai Fudan University from China in Sarawak is expected to significantly benefit local students and the economy.
Federation of Chinese Association Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Division president Datuk Richard Wee said that it will attract not only Sarawakians but also overseas students from neighbouring countries.
This initiative demonstrates that the university, one of the top five in China, recognises the value of the education policy advocated by the Sarawak government.
“The branch campus will enhance higher education in Sarawak, akin to the branch campuses of Curtin and Swinburne universities from Australia, by providing more educational opportunities to locals and attracting foreign students here. This move will position Sarawak as an educational hub in the region,” he told New Sarawak Tribune.
According to Wee, Shanghai Fudan University has drawn numerous students from across the globe, especially those interested in the prestigious faculties of medicine and engineering.
“So for our Sarawakians interested in pursuing their studies at the university will be able to save on living and accommodation expenses once this is realised,” he added.
On Sunday, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that the Sarawak government supports the proposal to invite Shanghai Fudan University to establish a branch campus in Sarawak.
Currently, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian is in discussions with Chinese authorities on the cooperation between Malaysia and China to implement this initiative.
