KUCHING: The plan to build a new Kuching International Airport (KIA) is aimed at benefitting future generations.
While Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah did stress that it would not be implemented immediately, he reiterated that it is for the next generation.
“At that time, maybe Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and I are no longer around, but at least this plan will be for the leaders and people in the future.
“We can see that Sarawak is moving forward and the KIA is currently accommodating more passengers and has outlived its purpose when it was first built many years ago.”
He told the media this at a press conference at Baitulmakmur building II on Thursday (May 16).
Abdul Karim said the number of passengers that comes in and out of the airport has exceeded the capacity of the current KIA building.
“Therefore, we made plans to build another more suitable airport. However, it would not be done immediately.
“The old KIA airport will still be an airport, probably for private usage. We (the Sarawak government) will plan and decide as it is.”
Abdul Karim said that the construction of the new KIA will benefit several industries involved.
“Building a new airport can have a positive effect especially on the construction industry.”
Abang Johari said the new KIA would be in Kuching and will not only cater to passengers but also commercial cargo.
“We are already a hub for seaports therefore (we would want to be a) hub for aviation.”
