MIRI: The new Lutong Sunday Market (Pasar Minggu Lutong) was officially launched this morning, with nearly 70 lots already occupied by vendors.
Located just adjacent to the Lutong regular market, the new market, also known as Pasar Minggu Lutong, offers a good selection of goods including jungle produce at affordable prices.
The launch was officiated by Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting and witnessed by Miri mayor Adam Yii and his deputy Julaihi Mohammad.
Ting, when met after the launch, expressed his delight with the overwhelming response to the market from all quarters.
For the record, construction of the new Pasar Minggu Lutong commenced in January this year and was completed on April 29.
“The construction of this market is fully funded by the state government under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) project,” Ting pointed out, adding that the total cost of the project was RM200,000.
He said they would look into the traders’ requests for public toilets to be built at the market.
“We also will consider installing electricity at the market and placing some garbage bins for their convenience,” he said.
Meanwhile, Yii revealed that the city council was planning to build parking spaces near the market to help ease traffic congestion.
Most of the traders thanked the Sarawak government for the construction of the new market.
“It allows us to trade and, at the same time, helps us to generate some income,” said one of the vendors, Mena Debing, 30.
Another vendor Uchuk Ben also shared Mena’s view.
Most of the traders there are from the nearby settlements such as Kampung Pasir Lutong and Kampung Api.
