SIBU: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said a new Pelita Maslaut Sdn Bhd’s (PMSB) campus is being built in Miri.

“I was told by the director Mohamad Nazim Masni Amit that a new campus is being constructed in Miri to accommodate the need for more local sailors.

He said this would reduce or do away with foreign sailors for the state’s shipping industry in line with the aspiration of the state government.

Abang Johari said marine academies like PMSB would hasten the pace of development in the shipping industry.

“Either deck or engine (studies specialisation), it can increase the rate of development in the shipping industry in Sarawak in particular and

alaysia in general,” he said at its 20th-anniversary celebration cum closing of the Marine Apprentice Course 2022 yesterday (July 25).
His speech was read by Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Lee Khim Sim.

“Local residents sending their children or joining the courses conducted at PMSB can also improve their economic income,” he said.
Abang Johari added that during the two-year Covid-19 pandemic, the academy was also affected.

“In line with this, they had to conduct courses through hybrid mode to allow local seamen to carry out their job.

“Although there are many academies like this in Malaysia, I am aware that PMSB is among the top after Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM) in Malacca, which is the foremost academy or training centre in the region based on feedback from the departments related to it,” he said.

Abang Johari also congratulated PMSB for winning Malaysia’s Best Maritime Institution Award in 2016 in conjunction with World Seafarers Day 2017 at KLCC.

Also present were PMSB general manager Mohamad Nazim Masni Amit and State Marine Department director Mohamad Marzuki Brahim.
