KUCHING: Former Senator Datuk Dr Zaiedi Suhaili, who was sworn in as Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Deputy Mayor today, pledged to work closely with other city councils to develop the state’s capital.
He said cooperation among all parties, from the top management of the city councils as well as the councillors and public, is important to ensure that various tasks are carried out effectively.
“MBKS cannot work alone; we need to work closely with Kuching North Kuching City Hall (DBKU), Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) to make Greater Kuching a reality.
“We want to make Kuching a more liveable city – a place to live, work and play. We want people who will attract more business, social and cultural activities,” he told the reporters at a press conference after the swearing-in ceremony held at the MBKS headquarters here.
Zaiedi also assured that he would support MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng throughout his three-year term, which took effect from Sept 1 this year until March 31, 2025.
He replaced replaced Hilmy Othman, who was appointed as the DBKU Mayor recently.
The ceremony was witnessed by Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also the Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister.
Zaiedi, 68, is a former political secretary to the late Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Sulaiman Daud, under three ministries namely Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (1990-1991), Ministry of Education (1991-1995) and Ministry of Agriculture (1995-1999).
He had also served as a board member of Kuching Water Board from 2007 to 2009 before being appointed as a councillor of Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).
He was later appointed as MPP deputy chairman in 2014.
In July 2016, he was appointed as a senator to replace Dayang Madinah Tun Openg by the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) and reappointed in 2019 until his retirement in 2022.
Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Dr. Penguang Manggil, Wee and Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman were among those who present.
