KUCHING: It might not be a terrible idea for newly appointed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and his Cabinet to consider creating a new ministry dedicated to the needs of children, said Datuk Chiew Yen Chew.
According to the Progressive Democratic Party’s (PDP) Women’s chief, a Ministry for Children might help the government establish and extend its capacity to provide efficient service to every child.
“Like any other developing country, Malaysia faces issues affecting children.
“Although children make up almost a third of our population, not everyone is aware of their rights or to what extent the issues are in our country,” she said.
Chiew added that despite the steady efforts made by our Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWM) who are consistent with perseverance to improve childcare issues and education in Sarawak, we still need bigger capacity in the government to address the growing issues related to children.
“This is to address child poverty, eradicating diseases, strengthening child protection, improving and upgrading early education for children, as well enrolling more children into school,” she said.
