MUKAH: Tellian assemblyman Yussibnosh Balo described the establishment of Sarawak Public Relations Unit (Ukas) in the Chief Minister’s (CM) Department as important because it helps to disseminate relevant information pertaining to the state.
Ukas was set up at the end of 2018 after the defeat of former Barisan Nasional (BN) federal government by Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the 14th general election.
The PH regime somehow practised a double-standard policy in Sarawak as far as state news publicity was concerned, thus leading to the emergence of Ukas.
For the record, the PH regime collapsed in February this year following a political crisis which subsequently gave rise to a new administration — Perikatan National Plus Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) (PN Plus GPS).
Yussibnosh said with its various platforms, Ukas now also functions as the mass media focusing on the state’s matters and issues in assisting to disseminate important information to the people, particularly pertaining to development and policies.
“In carrying out its duty, Ukas also cooperates with relevant departments and agencies as well as local representatives,” he said at Ukas@Community N57 Tellian event at the New Administrative Building (SCORE Building) here yesterday.
Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Corporate Affairs and Ukas) Abdullah Saidol was the guest of honour.
Earlier in his opening speech, Ukas special administrative officer Datuk Takun Sunggah who represented the director gave a briefing on the history, role and functions of the unit.
The former Sarawak Election Commission director added Ukas also aims to assist the people in adapting to the new normal post-Covid-19.
