SIBU: Newly formed Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) claims to support the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Its president Larry Sng told a media conference after chairing a special meeting of the PBM General Conference at a hotel here on Saturday (Jan 8).
Larry said PBM would also cooperate with the Gabungan Parti Sarawak GPS state government.
“We also have representatives from the government, so we are clearly behind the Prime Minister and the government today.
“In Sarawak, GPS is also part of the Keluarga Malaysia, so for us, we will also work together in the same Keluarga Malaysia,” explained the Julau Member of Parliament.
Sng said PBM was a national party with multiracial members.
According to him, PBM would focus on women’s issues, youth issues, economic aspects, science, technology and education.
“PBM is not a new party, but a continuation of an existing local party and is now being expanded to a national-level party.
“Previously, the party was called the Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) and the Registrar of Societies (ROS) has approved the change of name to PBM.
“It is a multiracial party for all Malaysians and as you can see, from the composition of the ranks, we have members from different states and some of them are elected representatives,” Sng said.
Previously, he said, SWP had about 40,000 members and recently Penggerak Komuniti Negara (PKN) announced that 53,000 members would join PBM.
He was confident the party would gain momentum to move forward as the party was constantly receiving new applications from across the country.
He revealed that Lembah Jaya (Selangor) assemblyman Haniza Mohamed Talha is deputy president I while Wong Judat is deputy president II of PBM.
During the meeting, Tebrau MP Steven Choong Shiau Yoon was elected senior vice president I and Buntong (Perak) assemblyman Sivasubramaniam Athinarayanan as senior vice president II.
Rahimah Majid, Dr Sathiskumar, Saful Bahari Sahri are vice presidents respectively while Sementa assemblyman (Selangor) Dr Daroyah Alwi is the Women chief and Na’im Brundage is Youth leader.
The secretary general is Nor Hizwan Ahmad while Tronoh assemblyman (Perak) Paul Yong is treasurer general.
