KUCHING: Sarawak recorded 229 Covid-19 positive cases today – a new daily record surpassing Wednesday’s 203 high, bringing the state’s tally to 2,931.
At the same time, the state also recorded two more Covid-19 related deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities so far to 24.
Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said 168 of the new cases were reported in Sibu, Miri (28), Kuching (nine), Kanowit, Sri Aman and Lubok Antu recorded seven cases each, Subis (two) and Bintulu (one).
“Of the 168 cases in Sibu District, 89 involved the Pasai Cluster and 79 were screenings by individuals at health centres in the district.
“In Miri, 10 cases involved the Pasai Cluster with eight cases categorised as Import C cases from Betong, Beluru and Bintulu districts. Meanwhile, five cases involved the Jelita Cluster, four cases involved Rakut Cluster and nine others from individual screenings.
“In Kuching, eight cases are individual screenings while one case was an individual returning from high risk area which is Sabah,” he said in a press conference on daily Covid-19 update on Friday (Jan 22).
He also mentioned that all seven cases in Kanowit involved the Pasai Cluster.
Six cases in Sri Aman involved the Pasai Cluster while the other case involved an illegal immigrant (Pati).
In Lubok Antu, all seven new cases were close contacts to other positive cases reported previously.
In Subis, one case involved the Rakut Cluster and categorised as Import C case from Miri. Another case reported in the same district was detected through individual screening.
The one case in Bintulu was an individual returning from high risk area which is Perak.
As of Friday, there were eight active Covid-19 clusters in Sarawak, namely the Rakut Cluster, Jelita Cluster and Bah Sayap Cluster in Miri; Bukit Sekubong Cluster in Sebauh; Pasai Cluster in Sibu; Keranji Tabuan Cluster and Stutong Cluster in Kuching; and Mador Cluster in Meradong.
Uggah also said 141 patients had recovered and discharged from hospitals on Friday – 68 from Sibu Hospital, 45 from Miri Hospital, 23 from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and five from Bintulu Hospital.
“This brings the total number of recovered and discharged cases to 1,469 or 50.12 percent of total Covid-19 cases in Sarawak,” he pointed out.
Also today, there were 1,442 individuals still undergoing treatment at hospital isolation wards in the state – 999 in Sibu Hospital, Miri Hospital (238), SGH (133), Bintulu Hospital (71), and Limbang Hospital (one).
Three cases in Sibu Hospital and one case in SGH required equipment support but were in stable condition.
“Today (Friday), 293 new person-under-investigation (PUI) cases have been reported and 57 PUIs are still awaiting laboratory results,” Uggah added.
