SIBU: The respiratory unit at Jalan Oya Health Clinic is now open to the public.
The building was constructed on the clinic’s previous parking lots starting November last year with a total cost of RM150,000 and its construction has been completed in April this year.
Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said that with the building’s completion, patients with respiratory illnesses undergoing check-ups were now separated from others.
He cited that the building served as an isolation and screening unit for cough and flu, as well as for follow-up treatment for tuberculosis.
“This unit help to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses like tuberculosis to other patients who are waiting to see doctors at this clinic, by isolating them until they can be adequately screened and checked by medical doctors,” he said in his speech at the commissioning of the unit here today (May 24).
Chieng said the clinic was among the most visited clinic in Sibu town, with an average of 1,000 patients per day.
“As such, preventing the spread of respiratory diseases in such a busy clinic is of paramount importance to safeguard the people,” he added.
According to Chieng, Jalan Oya Health Clinic has between 20 to 30 tuberculosis patients daily.
Sibu Division Health Department officer, Dr. Teh Jo Hun, commended Chieng for expediting the construction of the respiratory unit through his Minor Rural Project (MRP) fund.
