KUCHING: A bridge worth RM730,000 will be constructed this year to upgrade the existing link road in Kampung Matang Batu 9, says Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Ir Aidel Lariwoo.

According to him, the decision to upgrade the bridge to meet Public Works Department (JKR) standards aims to address the challenges faced by local residents, particularly the disruption of the communication road during flood season.

“The original bridge collapsed due to strong currents during floods from the catchment area of Mount Serapi.

“Therefore, we held this visit and have instructed JKR to carry out the upgrade work immediately. The design of the bridge will be prepared first, followed by a tender process to construct the bridge within this year.

“We hope this effort will resolve the issues of communication roads and bridges for the residents in the future,” he said when met by reporters after visiting Kampung Matang Batu 9 today.

Meanwhile, Tupong assemblyman Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman stated that the bridge had previously been repaired with funds from the rural transformation project (RTP), but it was damaged again in the same year due to floodwaters from the mountain.

“The bridge was only temporarily repaired to allow residents to access the route.

“However, that was insufficient, as even a slight rise in water levels during floods would continue to obstruct their communication path.

“Therefore, this bridge upgrade is expected to ensure that road access remains usable, even during heavy rains or floods,” he said.

Additionally, Matang Batu 10 penghulu Wan Julihi Wan Ajoli shared the difficulties faced during the monsoon season.

He explained that rising waters during the rainy season severely hinder their ability to travel along the road in question.

“A total of nine houses, involving 50 to 60 residents on the opposite route, are affected, and with this assistance, we hope the problems we have faced so far can be resolved,” he added.
