SARIKEI: The state government’s initiative to provide a new route to Tanjung Manis will benefit the residents of the areas on the other side of Rajang River opposite this town.

Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment assistant minister Datuk Len Talif Salleh said these places – the Chinese community of Bukit Huang, Parit Bugis, and Muara Payang (inhabited by Ibans) – have the potential to be developed as a new agricultural area.

He added that the area used to produce crops such as pineapples, coffee, citrus fruits and vegetables. This area is known for its fertile soil, able to meet the needs of Sarikei and beyond.

During a recent ground-breaking ceremony, Chief Minister Abang Johari Tun Openg agreed in principle to build a wide bund connecting Bukit Huang, Parit Bugis, Muara Payang and the ferry point to facilitate the transportation of farm produce to the town.

“The new development will definitely boost economic development in the area. That is why I strongly need the cooperation of local leaders in order for all the plans to be implemented,” said Len when officiating at the opening of SK Muara Payang’s annual sports meet and inauguration of Industrial Building System (IBS) there.

At the event, Len, who is also Kuala Rajang assemblyman, said every student should be active in co-curricular activities which can influence their future careers.

According to him, co-curricular activities could help train human capital of high quality and strong self-esteem.

“At the same time, I want the community to develop the reading habit. Reading is not merely a requirement to pass examinations but also a way of getting knowledge and information,” he said.

Also present at the meet were Sarikei education officer Lau Ngie Tung, SK Muara Payang head Professor Micheal Brandon and Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) chairman Impin Aking.
