SAMARAHAN: A total of 63 Strategic Communication students from the Faculty of Language and Communication (FLC) Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) participated in a News Reporting Workshop for Beginners on Wednesday (Nov 2).

The workshop was conducted by New Sarawak Tribune deputy chief reporter Sarah Hafizah Chandra who shared on the exciting life as a media practitioner.

Apart from sharing some interesting experiences she encountered, Sarah talked about the dos and don’ts in news reporting as well as the challenges of being a reporter.

On Nov 1, the group of students also participated in a Publishing Industry in Malaysia Workshop by UNIMAS Publisher director Malia Taibi who is also a senior lecturer at FLC.

Malia talked about the issues and challenges of the publishing industry in Malaysia due to the lack of readership as well as the rise of online and social media.

According to lecturer for Strategic Communication programme Noratikah Mohamad Ashari, the main objective of the workshops was to provide students with exposures about the media industry through sharing by the speakers.

She disclosed that the faculty is eager to organise more workshops with industry players who have valuable experiences that they can share with the students.

“We need students to be more conscious about the industry, how the industry works and how knowledge is put to practice in the real world.

“These sessions will help the students to manage their expectations and hopefully, they will be more innovative in embarking their future careers in Mass Communication,” she told New Sarawak Tribune.

For the record, the FLC entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Tribune Press Sdn Bhd and SV News Sdn Bhd in 2021 for strategic partnership on collaborative journalism projects.

Through the collaboration, UNIMAS would be sending selected communication students to do their industrial training at either New Sarawak Tribune or its sister paper Suara Sarawak.
