BETONG: Residents here are hopeful and feeling a sense of relief that the construction of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sebemban will start this year.
Kampung Sebemban’s headman, Marawi Lepor, was relieved when the state government announced that the site for a six-classroom building and six houses for teachers have been prepared
“Saribas state assemblyman Mohammad Razi Sitam has confirmed that the tender documents are already with the Public Works Department (JKR),” he said to Sarawak Voice today.
“The people are expecting it to be realised even though the documentation is not in black and white yet.”
He pointed out that the safety of the students has been compromised and the residents were forced to speak up on the matter.
“We do not want anything bad happening to any of the students. The situation is getting worse and the building is located too close to the river.
“I don’t want the 2013 incident to happen again when a Primary 6 student became a victim of ‘sang bedal’ (crocodile) at the old school site. We want to avoid any such incident,” he said.
He then thanked Razi and Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah for looking into the matter seriously.
To him the intervention of the Sarawak government in helping to complete the school is commendable.
Marawi still expects the federal government to speed up the school project.
