Learning to be more patient, encouraging open communication with the kids, and striking a healthy work-life balance are all possible motherly resolutions. Depending on her objectives and situations, every mother may have different resolutions each year.

New set of goals to pursue

Being a mother is not an easy task, don’t you agree?

In addition to nurturing, offering emotional support, guaranteeing security, and creating an atmosphere that is conducive to her kids’ growth and development, motherhood also calls for her to handle household chores and set an example for her children.

A mother should, above all, take care of her health, since a woman in good health is more capable of managing the physical and mental demands of providing care.

Being healthy also enhances the mother’s ability to provide support, take care of her family, and create a positive environment.

As we enter the New Year, I’m sure that many mothers — working or stay-at-home moms alike — have their own goals in mind. These may include plans for their families or how they want to allocate their time between their personal lives, careers, households, and kids, among other things.

I asked a few moms about their New Year’s resolutions, and here are the answers:

Magdeline with her husband, Nicholas Ngabong Libin, and kids.

Magdeline George Spill, 43
I place a high value on strong family ties, and I think that it is important for parents to keep a closer eye on their kids’ activities and to remember to react to any emotions, moods, or behaviours they exhibit.

As a mother of two children, 13-year-old Aurelia Usun and 15-year-old Fitzgerald Ajeng, I must admit that there are moments when I become overly conceited and jump to conclusions without giving the kids’ explanations a chance to air.

Being a strict mother, I’ve established guidelines at home, such as designating specific times and places that are prohibited for gadgets. For example, both of them are strictly forbidden to use their smartphones when dining or spending time with family.

We should, in my opinion, spend these moments engaging with our family members since it fosters better communication.

Now that they’re becoming teenagers, my goals for this year are to try to spend as much time as possible with them as well as learn more about them (who are no longer little children).

I wish you all a year filled with growth, happiness, and success!

Nurismi with her husband, Saifuddin Suhanda, and kids.

Nurismi Ismaili, 36
As a mother to two energetic boys, 9-year-old Fayyadh Ziqri and 11-year-old Naufal Siddiq, a counsellor trainee, and the owner of a business (PopiaCrunch), I found that juggling my three responsibilities can be challenging at times.

There will occasionally be things that must be given up when my three duties collide. The only way I can balance my job, then, is to recognise which priority to provide at what times.

Nevertheless, becoming a mother is my top priority because I believe that raising children is an unmatched investment in the hereafter. Without a doubt, if I had to choose between my three roles, I would choose my kids.

My growing sons are the ones I truly want to spend meaningful time with. Hence, making more time for them is my primary goal for this year.

Apart from that, one of my other resolutions is that I want to avoid comparing my life’s journey to anyone else’s. In my opinion, I am actually racing against myself rather than against other people; this implies that I have to do better than I did yesterday.

As we enter 2024, I wish all the readers a joyful new year filled with laughter, love, and exciting new adventures. May it be a chapter of success, good health, and endless possibilities!

Ellissa with her husband, Hafizahril Hamid, and kids.

Ellissa Corniellia Ahmad, 44
I would like to embrace 2024 with a focus on self-care, family connection, and personal growth.

I also want to prioritise my emotional, spiritual, mental, and physical wellbeing, reconnect with my passions, read, and set goals for myself and my family.

As a mother of two boys, Seth Umar, 6, and Rafael Sulaiman, 2, I wish and will try my very best to support my sons’ passions, celebrate their talents and skills, and strengthen bonding with the family.

I also plan to have some adventures and activities with my family and reconnect with nature.

Last but not least, I also intend to continue with last year’s unfulfilled resolution — to reach my ideal weight or lose at least five kilogrammes.

I wish everyone good health and to stay safe. I also hope and wish that 2024 will be a year filled with joy, fulfilment, and love for all. Happy New Year 2024!

Dolly and her son, Asher Gideon.

Dolly Jenil, 42
My son and I enjoy exploring new places and foods as well as doing trips, so this year I want to take him on more trips, maybe to islands around Sabah.

As we already knew, Sabah is indeed a beautiful state known for its breathtaking islands and other natural treasures. I would love to bring my kid to experience the colourful culture, diverse marine life, and picturesque landscapes.

In addition, as life and the economy are becoming more and more challenging, I want to start teaching my 12-year-old only child, Asher Gideon, how to save money for his own needs. Consequently, I think it’s critical to instill independence in kids from a young age.

One of my other goals is to attempt starting an online business. I have a few ideas, one of which is to sell products based on hobbies. But I have to divide my time wisely for this since I work full-time.

May this year be filled with joy, growth, and meaningful moments; bring us success and fulfilment in all our endeavours!

Eryna with her husband, Maliki Mohd Noor, and kids.

Nur Eryna Angela James, 37
I’m sure every mother must dream of the best for their children, and each year brings with it a new set of goals to pursue.

As the mother of three daughters, 2-year-old Nur Alani Fatini, 7-year-old Nur Alani Fathiya, and 8-year-old Nur Alani Faiha, I am determined to educate the children to be more self-reliant and able to get along with one another as sisters this year.

I intend to regularly have heart-to-heart talks with my kids since they are also growing up.

I also want to spend more time educating and teaching them about basic things in life, such as cooking rice, cleaning the house, and others.

In addition, I want to be a capable mother who can assist my partner with home chores and meet my girls’ fundamental needs, particularly in regards to education and extracurricular activities.

One of my other resolutions for this year is to start a business, possibly an online business, in order to support my husband’s income growth and better provide for our family.

Last but not least, may this New Year bring us boundless opportunities, joyous moments, and the courage to chase our dreams.
