Developers in New York are planning to create a beach along the Hudson River, against the backdrop of Manhattan’s towering skyscrapers and the district’s popular High Line park.
With construction set to begin next year, the public strand will have an area of 2.2 hectares, about the size of three football pitches, the developers say.
The area on the riverbank in south-west Manhattan is just a few minutes from the Whitney Museum and other attractions. The opening of the US$900-million project is planned for 2022.
You may be able to get your tan on, but don’t expect a nice spot for swimming.
While the water quality in the Hudson River has improved significantly in recent years, and recovering oyster numbers – New York was considered one of the most important places for oysters worldwide until the 19th century – point to increasingly clean water, the Hudson River’s strong currents make it questionable as to whether swimming would be safe. – dpa
