KUCHING: Dr Sharmila Bernau, the Deputy High Commissioner of the New Zealand High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, announced today the appointment of Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Hamid Bugo as New Zealand’s Honorary Consul in Sarawak, Malaysia.

While expressing appreciation for the appointment, he emphasised his special bond with New Zealand.

“I have only experienced such privilege and hospitality in New Zealand. I am profoundly honoured to continue fostering the relationship between Sarawak and New Zealand,” he said.

He made this statement during his speech at the Matariki Festival at the Sheraton Hotel, coinciding with his new role as New Zealand’s Honorary Consul in Sarawak.

“This is an ideal moment for Sarawak and New Zealand to collaborate on various initiatives. We require cooperation and support, not only financially but also in terms of technical expertise. I am committed to uniting both regions to capitalise on these opportunities.” He highlighted these opportunities for collaborative growth.

Hamid Bugo obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Economics from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.

He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and a Postgraduate Certificate in Business Studies from the Harvard Institute of Development Studies, USA. Additionally, he was awarded a Ph D in Commerce from Lincoln University, New Zealand.

Matariki, also known as the Pleiades, holds cultural significance for the Māori people of New Zealand, marking their New Year.

It serves as a time for families to gather, celebrate, reflect, and honour their unique cultural heritage. In 2022, Matariki was established as New Zealand’s first indigenous public holiday, further fostering community and continuity among the Māori.
