KUCHING: An abandoned baby was fortunate to have been discovered by waste collection workers at a dumpsite at Moyan Square, Batu Kawa, here early this morning.

Apparently the dumpsite is frequented by strays which forage for food.

Thew newborn had the umbilical cord intact.

According to Padawan’ acting police chief DSP Lim Jaw Shyong, the baby was found in a box and a report was lodged by the public at the Batu Kawa police station at 9.18 am.

The baby has been taken to the Batu Kawa health clinic for treatment and examination, and police have started their investigation.

According to initial reports, the workers who discovered the baby sought assistance from stall owner Xiew Ping.

Describing the infant’s condition, Xiew Ping said that the baby appeared healthy and cute, emphasising the fortunate timing of the discovery.

“There are a lot of stray dogs in this area, especially at the dumpsite. Luckily someone found her,” she said.
