SIBU: It was a lucky day for 102 newlyweds and 100 newborns who each received an ‘angpao’ of RM500 and RM300 respectively from the Sarawak United People Party (SUPP) Pelawan Service Centre yesterday (July 4).
Wong Sing Yion, one of the newlyweds who received RM500, said that he was grateful for the incentive and thought it was a novel way to attract young voters.
“This is a good initiative. It was never been done before. It is a good way to introduce their (SUPP) service centre to the young people.
“The young are usually a bit ignorant when it comes to politics. Hence, through this kind of activities, they will start to appreciate the government’s incentives,” he said.
Wong, 36, an architect, married Lau Lee Ling, 38, last month.
Meanwhile, Nur Alisa, 23, a recipient of RM300 for her newborn, was represented by her sister Ngu Yee Fong as Nur is currently in Daro.
“My sister is very grateful for the incentive. The money comes in handy for her as she will use it for her baby girl’s expenses,” she said.
Pelawan assemblyman Michael Tiang Ming Tee, who was met by reporters during the handing-over ceremony, said the incentive was SUPP Pelawan Service Centre’s way to extend its assistance to the constituents.
“We will give this incentive annually to young people. It is to help them as we know they are also facing great financial challenges after getting married.
“I hope that through these so-called red packets, it can give them some assistance and encouragement at this stage when they begin their new life with their partners,” he said.
For the record, the two incentives were announced by Tiang in conjunction with the opening of his service centre in Sungai Merah on March 11.
