MIRI: Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) development agenda will be based on the coalition’s ‘Sarawak First’ approach. Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said this approach was in line with GPS’ fundamental principle, which is that it is a coalition of local-based parties with the common objective of improving the lot of Sarawakians and safeguarding their principal rights as enshrined in Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). “Sarawak First is our slogan in expressing our hopes and struggle to build our beloved state.
This is how we can bring positive changes to our state,” Johari said at the PBB Telang Usan Women Wing’s ‘Jasamu Dikenang’ appreciation night, Saturday. Johari pointed out that with GPS, the state would have a strong platform to voice out the people’s voice. The chief minister, who is also Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president, said after 55 years with the Barisan Nasional(BN), they had learnt their lessons. Now, with the new political landscape, they had to change for the betterment of the people. “Tonight is very significant occasion.
While appreciating our women’s contributions, this is the first time I am attending a political function after the registration of GPS,” said Johari. The chief minister added leaders faced many challenges but they endured.
“I believe PBB members are able to face whatever challenges. God willing, we will nurture GPS. GPS will be the platform in the dawn of political change,” he said. PBB Telang Usan was formed in 1970 with Datuk Stephen Wan Ullok as its first chairman “Ever since then, PBB Telang Usan membership has been growing,”said its chairman Dennis Ngau who is also Telang Usan state assemblyman. As of November 1 this year, the branch has a total 5,634 members.
“For 2011 until this year, we registered nearly 2,000 new members,” revealed Dennis. He added they hoped to recruit 8,000 new members before the party’s next conference. During the appreciation night, 25 PBB Telang Usan Women Wing members received certificates of appreciation for their past contributions.
