SIBU: A soldier has been arrested for possession of do-it-yourself (DIY) counterfeit RM4,000 notes to be used for his wedding.
The 28-year old corporal gave the fake money to his fiancee on March 30 last year.
However, the woman suspected that the money were counterfeit notes after getting them inspected although he told her that they were drawn from an ATM machine at Jalan Kpg Nyabor.
Sibu police chief, Assistant Commisisioner Stanley Jonathan Ringgit, said yesterday that the suspect, who has been a soldier for seven years, did indeed withdrew RM4,000 from his account on Feb 15.
However, after being told by his fiancee that the notes which he had given to her were not genuine, he lodged a police report hoping that the bank would replace the money.
“Our investigation shows that the suspect spent three days printing the counterfeit notes in an office at an army camp in early February,” he said.
Following the filing of a police report, the suspect was arrested at 7.15pm on Saturday (Feb 16).
The police also seized from him 55 pieces of RM50 and RM100 counterfeit notes, a genuine RM100 and a photocopy machine which belongs to the army camp.
The case, ACP Stanley said, is being investigated under Section 489 of the Penal Code for possession of counterfeit money.
