MIRI: Police are requesting help from members of the public to trace the next-of-kin of a man who was beaten to death last Saturday night (Feb 1) by a group of eight individuals over the theft of a mobile phone.

According to Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah, the dead man, Harry Janting, believed to be in his early 20s and a local, had tattoos on his right arm and a fish head tattoo on his left shoulder. He is thought to be from Jalan Kampung Masjid Bintulu.

He was found dead on the back seat of a four-wheel-drive (4WD) after being allegedly assaulted by the suspects, including an Indonesian woman.  

“We are looking for the dead man’s next-of-kin to help us identify his body,” said Lim.

After the assault, five of the suspects drove the man to Miri central police station around 9.35pm (Feb 1).

Unfortunately, the man, who was about 158 cm tall, died because of the serious head injuries he suffered.

His body is being kept in the Miri Hospital morgue.

Meanwhile, the eight suspects detained in connection with his death on Saturday including the Indonesian woman have been remanded for seven days until February 9 to assist police probe into the case.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
