KUCHING: Hope Place Kuching recently assisted an elderly lady named Chong Choon Fah who was referred to by a concerned member of the public.

The charitable non-governmental organisation (NGO) said, Chong is a 70-year-old single mother who has been raising her three adult children on her own for over 40 years. Unfortunately, two of her children are mentally disabled.

“Chong has tried her best to raise her children by herself, but unfortunately her 46-year-old son is mentally disabled since he was young while her 49-year-old daughter became mentally disabled in her twenties,” said the NGO in a press statement today (April 6)

The sole breadwinner for the family is Chong’s youngest son, who is 38 years old and works for a gas cylinder service company. While Chong is relatively healthy, she does have a leg problem and uses a walking cane to get around.

Her daughter, on the other hand, not only has a disability but also suffers from diabetes, which has caused one of her legs to swell. Despite these challenges, Chong’s daughter helps around the house and mainly cooks for the family. Meanwhile, her disabled son often collects wild vegetables and goes fishing to help provide food for the family.

The family’s home in Matang does not have any electricity, but recently a group of good Samaritans installed solar lights for them, according to Hope Place.

Hope Place is supporting Chong and her family by providing them with food supplies and new mattresses. “We are grateful for the opportunity to assist Chong and her family during this difficult time,” said the NGO.
