KUCHING: Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and associations are urged to continue their efforts in community service while also contributing to Sarawak nation building.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the contributions of these groups would advance the well-being of Sarawakians and the state’s development.
“While you are doing good deeds, it is also crucial to consider the impact on Sarawak’s nation-building agenda.
“Sarawak nation building requires teamwork and this responsibility is not exclusive to the Sarawak government but is a duty shared by all,” he said.
He said this during the cheque presentation to the NGOs and associations at the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Headquarters here today (Mar 24).
Dr Sim, who is also the SUPP president said the state’s initiatives in taking over Bakun Dam and Bintulu Port from the federal government are integral components of Sarawak’s development strategy.
“By taking over, it would allow Sarawak to generate more revenue and this will go towards providing better facilities for Sarawakians including healthcare,” he said.
He added that the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s vision to offer free tertiary education at Sarawak-owned universities was also part of the Sarawak nation building.
“Imagine, there are 20,000 students enrolling to these universities, in 10 years time, we would have 200,000 trained and skilled workforce.
“Last time, we did not have the money, but now, with the resources available, we must do something good for Sarawak.
“Therefore, let us continue our efforts to build a brighter future for Sarawak, and by 2030, we look forward to the state achieving a high-income state status,” he said.
Earlier, Dr Sim presented the mock cheque to the respective recipients from 45 local NGOs and associations.
Among those present was Political Secretary to the Premier, Kho Teck Wan.
