NIAH: The potential designation of Niah National Park as a United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage Site holds great promise for the economic prosperity of the locals.

In a Facebook statement, the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) said that it is expected to boost tourism in the area, create business opportunities, and provide employment for the local population.

Consequently, it will contribute to the socioeconomic development and enhance the living standards of the community.

In pursuit of this prestigious recognition, the corporation said it has collaborated with various stakeholders, including government authorities, local community groups, and international experts specialising in cultural heritage and environmental conservation.

These collaborative efforts, it said, aim to ensure that Niah National Park meets all the criteria and standards set by UNESCO.

“SFC hopes that this recognition will safeguard the historical heritage and ecological diversity of Niah and establish its global recognition,” it said.

The vibrant Niah community came together today (June 10) at Niah National Park to celebrate the Ngabang Gawai SFC event.

The gathering not only marked the festivities of Gawai Dayak with the Niah community but also aimed to inform the public, particularly the local residents, about the nomination of Niah National Park as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Organised by SFC, the event was officiated by SFC chief executive officer Zolkipli Mohamad Aton.

A total of 110 people, including department heads, top SFC management, tribal leaders, village chiefs, principals, and teachers from the Niah region, attended the ceremony.

The Ngabang Gawai SFC event has served as a crucial platform to introduce the nomination of Niah National Park as a UNESCO World Heritage Site to the general public.
