MIRI: Significant development initiatives are on the horizon for the Niah area as Taman Negara Niah marks its 50th anniversary as a protected site today (Nov 24).
Deputy Minister for Health and Sibuti MP Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni said that Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will review and launch the Niah Riverbank Protection Master Plan.
“We are initiating conservation projects for the riverbanks alongside comprehensive development efforts in the Niah areas,” Lukanisman said during the celebration at Niah National Park, organised by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC).
The government has also approved funds for upgrading Niah Cave’s facilities to enhance accessibility and the visitor experience.
“We’ve had to adjust our plans to ensure the protection of the park’s ecological and historical integrity,” he added.
Infrastructure improvements include two new roads leading to Niah Cave: one via the Pan Borneo Highway and another through the Coastal Road.
The latter will also see the development of a new cluster to connect Bekenu Town and the Niah area.
Lukanisman expressed optimism about the Sarawak government’s strategic planning, particularly the State Budget 2025.
He called for community support to realise these projects, which are expected to boost local tourism and the Niah economy.
