LUNDU: Nine foreigners, including three women, were deported back to Indonesia on Sunday (Oct 27) after being caught entering Sarawak illegally.
The First Infantry Division said the arrests were made in two separate incidents in Biawak: one at 7.45 am and another at 12.45 pm.
A joint team of Malaysian and Indonesian soldiers apprehended a man in the morning and a group of eight individuals in the afternoon.
All were attempting to cross the border from Indonesia into Sarawak.
“The foreigners, aged between 24 and 43, were detained for inspection after entering the country illegally. They were apprehended approximately 350 metres and 245 metres from the border, respectively,” the division said in a statement.
“Searches of their belongings revealed only personal items such as cash, phones, wallets, and clothes, totaling RM6,077 in value,” it added.
After verification, all nine individuals were escorted to the border and deported to Indonesia.
To date, the army has deported a total of 187 foreigners caught entering Sarawak illegally.
