MUKAH: If you are interested to get pure nipah salt, which is produced in a traditional way, you can buy it at the Belanga smokehouse.
Owned by Hamdiah Sofian, 58, it is located at Kampung Penat Hulu, more than 10 kilometres away from town.
Suara Sarawak found out from Hamdiah that it is the only one that produces nipah salt using traditional equipment in the village.
“You can see we still use the fronds of the Balau tree and it tastes really authentic,” said Hamdiah, pointing out that that it takes 16 hours of work.
“My knowledge and experience have been passed on to the children … preparing this original nipah salt promises good returns.
“ By selling this nipah salt, my family can get approximately RM2,000 to RM3,000 per month.”
It is quite a long process that takes about 15 to 16 hours to get nipah salt that has been cooked in the kitchen, said Hamdiah.
“Nipah Asli salt is sold at a price of RM40 per kilogram and some is also available in small packages that cost RM4.”
