MUKAH: Local folk are hoping that the proposed Giat Mara Mukah project here will soon materialise.
It is located at KM7, Jalan Mukah-Oya — some 200m into the road leading to Politeknik Mukah.
Former rural and regional development minister Datuk Seri Ismail Saberi Yaacob officiated at the earth-breaking ceremony of the project in 2016. Since then local people have been wondering why the project begin didn’t seem to get off the ground.
According to a signboard erected at site, the project components comprised an administration block, workshops (two), surau, transits (two), security post and a waste disposal centre.
The project’s client was Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), while the Sibu-based contractor Akmal Enterprise had been entrusted to deliver it.
The architect for the project was Adesign Architects Sdn Bhd, Kuching, while Perunding Tra (77426), Kuching was involved in civil/structural works, and Jurutera Azan Bersekutu Sdn Bhd (Kuching) and Perunding Ukur Bahan Asmy (Kuching) were assigned the mechanical/electrical works and quantity surveying aspects respectively.
A survey by New Sarawak Tribune yesterday found that certain initial works such as zinc sheet barricade had been installed, and a steel container measuring about 10×20 feet sat among tall grass in the project site.
It is learned that currently there are15 trainees, including a female, taking an 18-month electrical wiring course, and another 15 on a 12-month welding technology course at Giat Mara Mukah. The electrical wiring trainees and the administration staff are occupying a rented commercial building near the town, while the welding technology trainees are using the old Giat Mara premises at Jalan Pump Station here.
