KUCHING: The Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) Run at the old State Legislative Assembly (DUN) ground tomorrow (Sept 15) will go on despite the  current weather condition.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said if the weather permits, Saberkas would proceed with the run.  “If the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading exceeded 200, we will have to call it off,” he told reporters after chairing ameeting with Saberkas members at the Baitulmakmur Building, yesterday.

Abdul Karim, who is also Saberkas deputy president, however said the programme would still be on, and runners would be asked to gather at the old DUN compound for other side activities.
“The API reading has already improved in the past few days and we hope we can carry on with the run.”

In the meantime, Abdul Karim said the run indeed would be a meaningful one, as it would be held in conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebration on Sept 16.  Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg would officiate at the run at 6.30am.

Abdul Karim then said Saberkas targeted some 3,000 participants and presently, about 2,500 people had already registered.  “The run is still open to all,” he said. There will be three categories for the run, namely the 7km Unity Run, 3km Family Run and 1km VIP Run.

The 7km covers the route from the  old DUN, passing Sesco roundabout, Jalan Bako, Jalan Demak and back to the old DUN.  As for the 3km run, the starting point will be from the old DUN, passing the new DUN and back to the old DUN.

While those who prefer a leisure run are encouraged to take the 1km run, and it will only cover the old DUN compound.  Each registered runner will be given a t-shirt, goody bag and a finisher medal medal upon completion of the run. Registration fee is RM50 per individual. For those who register in a group of more than 50 people, fees will only be RM20 per person.  Walk-in registrations can also be made on the day of the event.
