KUCHING: The construction of an access road to link the Stutong Resettlement Scheme to 7th Mile Bazaar (Kota Sentosa) is waiting for the decision of the State Public Works Department (JKR).

Kota Sentosa assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen brought the matter up in a press conference at Democratic Action Party (DAP) headquarters here, yesterday.

He said the project is federal-funded and approved in last year’s budget where the Finance Ministry had allocated a budget of RM129.7 million for it.

“Of the amount, RM20 million has been allocated this year but the State Public Works Department has yet to give it the green light,” he told reporters.

When asked how long it would take to complete the project, Chong said that he could not give a definite answer as they were still waiting for the State JKR to implement it.

“Although this is a federal project, the decision to implement it is made by the State JKR since the Federal JKR does not have its agencies in Sarawak. It will only supervise the works.”

Chong said the tender should have been called for earlier and is wondering why the State JKR is not carrying out the project.

The project is for the construction of an access road to the southern area of the Kuching International Airport.

It involves constructing of a 2.25-km four-lane road that connects the main road in the Stutong area to Jalan MCRU4 near Sungai Tapang.

Chong added that when the construction of the access road is completed, it will solve the traffic congestion problems at the 6th Mile, 7th Mile and 8th Mile areas.
