KUCHING: It is unnecessary to impose the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) for the whole of Kuching District despite the city’s declaration as a Covid-19 red zone.
In stating this, State Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the areas here were mostly free of the virus.
“We have thoroughly discussed this and taken into consideration the economy and health (of the people. We discovered that the focus is on Kampung Haji Baki here.
“Most of Kuching are green. But when all the cases are put together, the district became a red zone,” he explained during his visit to the Covid-19 operation centre in Kampung Haji Baki here today.
Uggah added the EMCO was enforced in Kampung Haji Baki after thorough research and after various issues were taken into account.
“In other places in Kuching, we have temporarily closed down all nightclubs and massage parlours and told restaurateurs to only operate until 10pm.
“This is why there is no need to impose EMCO for Kuching District,” he clarified.
On the implementation of inter-zone travel restrictions, particularly in and out of this city, Uggah said various issues should be taken into consideration.
He added that although it might seem as the best option, people’s lives would be affected by the restrictions.
Uggah advised those from outside the city to avoid visiting Kuching for now.
“For the people here, if there is no important matter, please stay at home,” he added.
