KUCHING: The Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) says entrepreneurship and finance subjects need not be taught in secondary schools.
Reacting to Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan’s suggestion to teach the subjects, the association pointed out that since long ago, secondary and even primary schools have Finance and Entrepreneurship Clubs.
“Therefore, instead of setting up the subjects, it may be necessary to improve the module in the clubs o facilitate students’ understanding of good financial management.
“In other words, the Entrepreneurship and Finance Club needs to be more proactive in carrying out activities related to financial management.
“In addition, elective subjects such as accounting and trading principles are still relevant and can be supplemented in terms of the syllabus,” it said in a statement today.
Moreover, it said the Ministry of Finance (MoF) can also allocate special allocations to schools that have entrepreneurship and finance which are actively organising programmes and activities related to entrepreneurship and finance.
“Indirectly, these clubs can educate students on the importance of managing finances wisely and prudently,” it said.
For the record, it was reported that MoF will forward a recommendation to the Education Ministry (MoE) to set up a new secondary school subject relating to finance and entrepreneurship.
Ahmad Maslan said his ministry will recommend to MoE that the subject on finance and entrepreneurship be taught at the secondary school level from Form 1 to Form 6.
“We want the youth to understand the subject in a more structured and systematic manner, as many will benefit by being financially savvy and having an entrepreneurial spirit,” he said.
