MIRI: Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau has assured his constituents that they need not worry about food as the state government is committed to help them during the movement control order (MCO) period.

He said more food would be delivered to remotes areas as the government wanted to ensure that nobody would go hungry during this difficult time.

On Friday, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced a second extension to the MCO for another two weeks until April 28. The first extension was from April 1 to 14.

“Life is no longer normal and people, especially those who have no permanent job and steady income like most people in my constituency have started to feel the pinch.

“The MCO has prevented them from earning a living as well as travelling to nearest town to buy basic ration for their family,” Dennis said.

The assemblyman had just returned from delivering food rations to the Penan settlement of Ba Itam Bunau situated deep in the interior of Telang Usan on Friday.

Ba Itam Bunau has a 45-door longhouse comprising over 200 villagers.

“What we deliver may not fulfill every family’s needs but should offer some help and show that the State government always care for the rakyat,” Dennis explained.

He advised the villagers to adhere strictly to the MCO in order to ensure they are safe from the virus.

Dennis said that although his constituency could only be reached by logging roads and rivers, more than two thirds of the 82 longhouses or settlements have been delivered the food aid.

He thanked the Malaysian Armed Forces for their assistance in delivering the food aid to some remote areas in Ulu Tinjar and Ulu Baram using helicopters which would have taken up to three days to send via timber roads and rivers.

The food rations arrive at its destination after a six-hour journey.
