KUCHING: The label ‘Ulun Malaya’ should not be used to describe any Sarawakian especially our politicians, said Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Women chief Kho Teck Wan.
She said such label was degrading and lowly, as whoever it was directed at, that person is still ‘anak Sarawak’ (Sarawakian).
“We don’t call anybody ‘ulun Malaya’ here,” she told reporters after attending the Kuching in Your Eyes 2.0: Sungai Tabuan Edition photography contest held at Vivacity Megamall, yesterday.
She was responding to comments made by netizens either towards Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) decision to join the federal Cabinet or even the Malaya-based Democratic Action Party (DAP) in Sarawak.
Kho said, “Over time, people will see what we GPS are fighting for. We have been safeguarding our autonomy and we will continue to do so.
“I believe the consistency is there for you to see. The racial and religious harmony in Sarawak did not happen by accident. It is achieved through the years that we have protected Sarawak with our immigration autonomy.
“We will not risk it just for the sake of being in the government.”
She urged Sarawakians to put their trust in the chief minister’s decision whose intention was to have a better platform to fight for Sarawak’s interests.
She concurred with Abang Johari’s statement that the GPS would remain as an independent entity and not join the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.
“But if there is a chance for us to be in a good position to fight for Sarawak’s rights, we should take the offer especially when we are the kingmaker which made it possible for PN to become the government.
“The chief minister’s intention is that if we are offered a good position which is beneficial to Sarawak, we should take it,” she said.
